Zambia: More Tourists Flock to Victoria Falls

11 July 2009

THE number of tourists who visited the Victoria Falls during the four-day holiday substantially increased due to the presence of first ladies from Zambia and Tanzania who were both in Livingstone.

National Heritage Conservation Commission information and public relations manager, Isaac Kanguya said the turnout for the lunar rainbow that ran from July 5 to 10 was also very impressive. "The visit by the first ladies from Zambia and Tanzania on Monday added spice as so many people came in just to have a glimpse of them," Mr Kanguya said.

Mr Kanguya said Zambians had come to know about the lunar rainbow, hence the high turnout at the only clear lunar rainbow in the world. He said the high turnout was also because of the lunar rainbow days coinciding with the four-day break and the Lwiindi ceremony in Chief Mukuni's area.

He said the lunar rainbow days had been extended from the normal three days to five because of the four-day break. He called on more locals across the country to visit the tourist capital as they were missing so much in their backyard.

Zambezi Sun Hotel commercial manager, Craig Levey said the hotel had over 80 per cent occupancy over the four-days holiday. He said the high turnout at the hotel was because of the promotion they ran during the four days and the people who had come to witness the Lwiindi ceremony.

He said the majority of the people who lodged at the hotel over the four-day period were Zambians.
