Zambia: I am Ready to Challenge Banda - Ngesa

10 July 2009

A NDOLA-based MMD member, Charles Ngesa has said that he is ready to challenge President Rupiah Banda at the forthcoming party national convention and is certain that no one will block him.

Mr Ngesa said in an interview in Ndola yesterday that he had chances of emerging victorious at the national convention. He said currently there was no law which barred anyone from participating in the MMD presidential race.

"Currently the law allows me to contest the party presidency and I will do so accordingly. I rate myself highly . I am sure I can do well once given a chance to take part in the MMD presidential race at the convention," he said.

Mr Ngesa also called on other party members who had presidential ambitions to come out in the open because no one would block them from exercising their democratic right as long as they were genuine party members.

"Some utterances being made by some of our party officials who seem to be discouraging people from contesting the presidency at the national convention are creating a bad impression of our party and the country's political scenario," he said.

Mr Ngesa, 49, is a building works manager at Ndola City Council and this will be his second attempt at the presidency.

He made his first attempt last year but did not file his nomination at the MMD national executive committee elections to select the party's presidential candidate after the demise of president Mwanawasa in August last year.
