Angola: Lecturer Defends Greater Media Intervention in Spreading Ban On Smoking

Luanda — The Principal of Lusiadas University of Angola (ULA) Mário Pinto de Andrade, Thursday here has defended, a greater diffusion by the state-owned and private mass media of law against public smoking, approved in July, 1st by the Cabinet Council.

Speaking to Angop, the academic, stated that mass media organs such as Radio, TV, newspaper and others need to hold awareness campaigns countrywide about the law against public smoking, before its enforcement.

Regarding to this last aspect, Mário Pinto de Andrade praised the government decision, stressing that the decree will contribute to the reduction of many cases of diseases associated to the use of tobacco.

Other benefits of law, pointed by the principal, will be the reduction of number of smokers, mainly involving teenagers and youths, supporting therefore the efforts made by the authorities in the fight against smoking.

He added that at his university there will not be allowed smoking, whilst at classrooms the measure is being enforced already since the creation of the university.
