Angola: EC Highlights President Dos Santos's Participation in G8 Summit

9 July 2009

L'aquila — The European Commission (EC) president, Durão Barroso, said Thursday in L'Aquila (Rome) that the presence of Angola at the G8 Summit shows the country's growing importance in the discussion of the great world's matters.

"I hope that Angola makes a contribute to the resolution of the great problems of Africa and world", said the diplomat to journalists.

This is the first time Angola takes part in an event of this kind, Durão Barroso said, adding that as the G8 dean, he is one of those who fought most for the group to expand and involve African countries.

"I am very glad to meet president José Eduardo dos Santos here", he also said.

José Eduardo dos Santos started Wednesday a State visit to Italy, to attend the G8 Summit, gathering the USA, Germany, Canada, Russia, Italy, France, UK and Japan.

The Angolan head of State will be addressing the summit on Friday. The event is discussing, among other topics, the world economic crisis.
