Nigeria: Farmers Decry High Cost of Fertilizer in Plateau

10 July 2009

Jos — Farmers in Plateau state have lamented the high cost of fertilizer this farming season. Some farmers who spoke to Daily Trust at Yandoya, Bukuru and Ouguiya markets in Jos said they find it difficult to get the fertilizer at subsidized rate because each bag now sells at the cost of N5,500 instead N1,700 announced by the government.

Mrs Rebecca Ezioekel. Mr Pam David, Augustine Iliya and Ahmed Abdurrahman said instead of the fertilizer going directly to the farmers at a subsidized price, it diverts to businessmen who buy at subsidized price and exploit the genuine farmers.

They appealed to Plateau state government to check the activities of officials in that habit and middlemen who prevent farmers from getting the commodity at subsidized prices.

Governor Jonah Jang had Tuesday expressed anger at the slow space of fertiliser distribution by the state Ministry of agriculture saying that out of over 300 trailers of fertilizers paid for by the government, only about 65 trailers have been delivered. He directed the ministry to take alternative measures in ensuring immediate delivery of fertilizer to farmers.
