Kampala — TWO-YEAR-OLD Latifah Kafuka's died in a fire that destroyed his family home in Bwaise, a Kampala suburb.

Kafuka's eight-month-old sister was admitted to Mulago Hospital in critical condition.

According to the Kawempe Police station boss, Simon Wafana, the children were alone in the house when the 9:00pm fire started. "A lit candle could have fallen on some inflammable material which caused the fire," Wafana said.

The children's mother, Monica Nangobi, arrived as residents and the Police fire brigade battled with the fire. It was reported that as the fire quickly spread, Kafuka tried to hide under the bed where he was trapped. It is still baffling how his sister, who reportedly lay on the bed, survived.

Wafana said Nangobi, who is nursing her daughter at the hospital, would be prosecuted for negligence if investigations implicate her.
