Namibia: Meningitis Outbreak in Ohangwena Region

ONE death and a number of hospitalisations have been recorded due to a meningitis outbreak in the Ohangwena Region, said Ohangwena Health Director Kaino Pohamba yesterday.

According to Pohamba, the death was recorded at Engela District Hospital. Two other deaths, of children, were recorded at Odibo Health Centre and at Edundja village, in the Oshikango Constituency, and meningitis is suspected in both cases. The two children were related.

The Ministry of Health launched a meningitis vaccination campaign today for children between the ages of two and 18.

"Ohangwena has been experiencing a rising number of meningitis cases, mostly reported from Oshikango and in order to prevent an outbreak, the Ministry of Health has decided to conduct a mass vaccination campaign in the affected areas," said Pohamba.

The vaccination centres are Engela Clinic, Ohangwena Clinic, Odibo Health Centre and Edundja Clinic. Ministry officials will also be visiting Oshikango CS, Odibo SS, Odibo CS, Elao CS, Nghiteke JPS, Onengali CS, Onghala CS, Engela JPS, Weyulu CS, Edundja JPS, Omwandi wElao, Oumbada, Oshitutuma, Okauva, among other places in the region.
