Abakaliki — Owing to increase in crime rate, particularly in snatching of money, the Police in Ebonyi State have recommended that the public as much possible should do away with carrying cash but transact business with cheques.
Commissioner of Police in the state Kachi Udeoji made the recommendation in Abakaliki after series of reported incidents where people withdrew money from banks and were attacked by bandits using motor bikes or cars.
The Police boss cautioned that the issue of robbers on motorcycles chasing people from banks when they come to withdraw money and rob them on the road, the public should be very careful when they go to withdraw from the bank and they should be very confidential as to who knows when and how much they go to withdraw because according to him, it is when this information is made available to robbers that they go and lay in wait for such persons.
"So People should be very careful. In actual facts, if you don't need cash for anything why not issue cheques to who ever you are doing business with?
The banks are very efficient these days. We advocate that the members of the public should as much as possible do away with cash transactions and do more of paper transactions.
And when they go to ATM they should look around and be sure of people they see around before they take money. This ATM is very a vulnerable thing because people go there at all hours of the day even in the night. They should look around to know that there is no strange person looking in the corner when taking money.
"If they have any problem, they should call the police men at the bank to assist them or should call taxi that can take them home to avoid incessant motorcycle robbery in the bank," advised Udeoji
He stated that the Ebonyi police command has recently sniffed the activities of criminals in the state when compared to other states in South-East. "Ebonyi State is still the safest, we have put out kidnapping in the past forth night or so, we have not had any such situation in the state. Armed robberies have been brought or reduced to the barest minimum and all forms of criminalities have been particularly reduced," stated Mr. Udeoji.
