NINE people were killed in separate road accidents while 14 others sustained injuries throughout Zambia during the Heroes and Unity holidays, police spokesperson, Bonny Kapeso has said.
Mr Kapeso said in a statement yesterday that Lusaka recorded the highest figure, with five people reported dead, while the Copperbelt had two deaths while Central and Western provinces recorded one death each.
Mr Kapeso said 20 people had minor injuries while 74 vehicles were reported damaged during the same period.
"A total of 125 road traffic accidents were reported this year indicating an increase of two per cent compared to last year when about 120 accidents were reported," he said.
Mr Kapeso said traffic police officers were deployed on all major highways, including the Great North and the Great East roads.
He said the traffic police officers conducted motorised patrols and mounted checkpoints on all major highways to reduce road accidents.
