Abuja — Former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, yesterday laid foundation for a 300 housing project at Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with a charge on the Federal Government to step up measures to address the endemic housing problem.

The project, being executed on an 83 hectares of land by a private estate developing firm, OpinioR Nigeria Ltd, is among the several housing development initiatives currently being implemented by the Federal Government, under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP).

The elder statesman whose tenure as governor was noted for impressive achievements in mass housing delivery in Lagos, attributed the over 17million housing deficit currently recorded in the country on lack of serious commitment on the part of the leadership and agencies invloved in housing delivery programme.

He said, "Nigeria is richly blessed with many resources, there is land, there is abundant human and mineral resources, as well as local building materials to actualise our development aspirations, but lack of national commitment, coupled with inefficiency, has robbed us of the much desired development," he said.Managing Director of OpinioR, Mr Salawu Muktar, said the houses are designed to accommodate every segment of income earners, both the high and low, covering two bedroom and three bedroom.

Muktar listed the facilities to be provided at the estate to include, access roads, electricity supply/street light, water supply, car parks, recreation centre, shopping complex, clinics and filling station.

He said the company is targeting the delivery of over 50 housing units by January, 2010.
