Paris — The Angolan head of the State Department for Higher Education, Adão do Nascimento, Tuesday in Paris (France) presented a communication on "The development of the pubic and private education in Angola".
This was during a session on the fringes of the World Conference on Higher Education taking place in Paris since July 5, at Unesco headquarters.
The Angolan official was addressing the session on "Equity, access and quality", under the concept of "Mastering the public and private education, affirming higher education as a public responsibility".
Adão do Nascimento highlighted the success scored by Angola, after the independence of the country, which led to a deep reform of the national education system.
He explained how the investments in the sector led to a school boom that pushed the number of students from 600,000 in 1975, up to three million in 1980.
In his address, Adão do Nascimento spoke of Angola's experience in post-conflict situations, having focused on the strategic role of higher education and research that led the Government into creating, in 2007, the State Department for Higher Education, tasked with outlining policies aimed at securing the management, control and development of higher education.
He said instruments that translate a vision and strategy for the development of higher education in the country were approved, in line with the national needs and the millennium development goals.
The official also spoke of the challenges facing the sector he leads and of the cooperation between Angola and the various countries and organisations, particularly Unesco.
Meanwhile, alongside the conference, Adão do Nascimento met with the director of the International Institute of Unesco Education Planning, Mark Bray, with whom he discussed the possibility of training for Angolans, with a focus on higher education, particularly in the fields of planning and statistics.
At the end of the audience, Adão do Nascimento said that Mark Bray confirmed the possibility of training for Angolans, both in the institute he leads and in Angola.
The World Conference on Higher Education being attended by about a thousand participants from 148 countries, is intended to establish a set of actions internationally acceptable that secure higher education and research to play a strategic role in the creation and sharing of knowledge, with a view to a more sustainable development.
