Eritrea: National Symposium On Participation of Women in Education Conducted in Massawa

4 July 2009

Massawa — A national symposium on the participation of women in education was conducted in Massawa from July 2 to 3, in connection with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the NUEW.

15 study papers were presented at the symposium focusing on the participation of females from the pre-school up to higher institutions of learning, the challenges encountered by female students and ways of tackling them, and the participation and achievements of female students in education, among others.

Speaking at the symposium, the Administrator of the Northern Red Sea region, Ms. Tsegereda Woldegergish, stressed the vital significance of education in ensuring equality, justice, stability and development. In this respect, she underlined the paramount importance of strengthening the educational competence of women in nurturing productive and civilized society.

The Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom, on his part outlined the Government's relentless endeavors to expand educational opportunities in all corners of the country and indicated that serious tasks are being undertaken to promote active women participation in all levels of education.

Noting that the remoteness of schools, cultural and social pressures, as well as lack of enough women teachers are some of the bottlenecks that are hindering the participation of females to education, he asserted that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with partners, especially the NUEW would work diligently in enhancing female participation in education.
