Zambia: Bandits Shoot 'Good Samaritan' Dead

6 July 2009

FIVE bandits on Saturday night shot dead a Lusaka's Kuku Township resident before stealing an undisclosed amount of money from a businessman who is running a shop within the same area.

Lusaka District police chief, Greenwell Nguni yesterday said the man who was shot by the bandits had gone to assist the owner of the shop after he shouted for help when the gunmen attacked him.

"These bandits attacked the owner of the shop. They had demanded for money from him. He resisted and fired, he started shouting for help.

"It was at this point that a group of people from a funeral house nearby heard and rushed to rescue the businessman. Unfortunately, one man was shot in the process and died on his way to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH)," he said.

Mr Nguni said the police did not apprehend the bandits but had identified the group that had been terrorising the residents and had launched a manhunt.

The commanding officer appealed to Kuku residents to assist the police with any information of suspicious people in the area so that they could be apprehended and make Kuku Township a free-crime area.
