Abuja — Six wild polio high risk areas in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State have been given priority coverage in the ongoing immunisation campaign against the disease. The Council's Primary Health Care Coordinator (PHC), Alhaji Sanusi Shehu, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Funtua, Katsina State yesterday. He said the areas were Dandutse, Maigamji, Makera, Unguwar Ibrahim, Unguwar Musa and Nassarawa.
Shehu explained that all the wards were located in Funtua town, pointing out that they were the areas which recorded a high degree of rejection.
According to him, the council authorities as well as Non Governmental and International organisations (NGOs) have joined hands in the awareness campaign. Shehu stressed that even the local barbers were also co-opted due to their relationship with parents in the community.
The coordinator said 63 teams would go round for the administration of vaccines at the 10 wards, while additional 39 special teams had been established to ensure immunisation of children on the streets and monitor call backs in areas not covered by other teams.
The exercise was hitch free at Malumfashi, Kafur and Danja with minimum non-compliance and that with the intervention of community leaders, minor disagreements were resolved.
A correspondent who monitored the exercise observed that because of the commencement of farming season at the affected areas, many parents went to the farm with their children.
