Windhoek — The City of Windhoek said residents should use electricity wisely as they will pay more since the implementation of Time Of Use (TOU) tariffs took effect this week.
Only larger electricity consumers such as manufacturers are affected directly by TOU charges, as existing electricity meters in homes are unable to record the exact time at which power is used.
This move comes in light of NamPower's announcement earlier this year that it would start charging the municipality and other bulk customers according to the TOU system from 1 July, as well as further indications that the power utility will increase its bulk price on electricity consumption by 15%.
In accordance with the TOU tariffs, the city will charge electricity at higher rates during June, July and August as well as on weekdays and on certain peak times of the day.
The city urged all consumers to consider using less electricity in the high demand season and to rather switch their equipment on in the off peak times, in order to avoid additional price increases.
According to Ferdinand Diener, strategic executive of electricity at the municipality, it was necessary for the city to introduce the TOU tariffs as it faces considerable risk if it buys on TOU and sells on non-TOU tariffs.
