Tanzania: Quality Construction Vital

2 July 2009

editorial

Construction sector is one of key areas in any society. That being the case, it should be carefully handled.

Contractors have to observe rules of the game when they are awarded tenders.

Shoddy workmanship in construction gives professionals and the whole the sector bad reputation, with attendant allegations that local contractors cannot perform well.

It is against this background that Infrastructure Development minister Shukuru Kawambwa, recently directed the Tanzania Road Agency (Tanroads) to monitor the performance of road contractors to ensure that it reflects the value of the money spent on the project.

A bridge at the former dump area linking Kigogo and Tabata in Dar es Salaam, for example, was constructed three times at different times after collapsing or being swept away by rains. It was alleged that poor workmanship was the cause of the problem.

Yet, despite all these scenarios, local contractors have been complaining of being denied construction bids.

But to win big construction tenders contracts, one has got to prove his competency by completing the work in agreed time and should be of good quality.

Therefore it should be borne that while crying for tenders, local contractors should also on their part perform to the required standards.

That is the only way of winning back confidence from the Government and general public.
