Kigali — As preparations to celebrate Liberation Day go into high gear, Kigali City Council (KCC) in partnership with youth associations in the city have embarked on a two-day drive of cleaning city streets.
Liberation Day is held every July 4.
The exercise which is estimated to cost over Rwf 8m will include sweeping the streets and repainting major zebra crossings around the city.
Speaking to The New Times after kicking off the exercise, Kigali City Mayor, Aisa Kirabo Kakira called upon city residents to follow suit and clean their places of work and residences.
She invited everyone to turn up massively for the celebrations that will be marked at national level at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali.
"This is a very important day in the lives of all Rwandans," she remarked.
Kirabo also called upon the respective leaders of all the 23 sectors that make up Kigali city to ensure that the social gatherings (Ubusabane) that are scheduled after the official celebrations are well organised.
According to KCC Communications Director Bruno Rangira, the city cleaning exercise was sponsored by several institutions and banks by providing paints and all necessary tools to make the exercise successful.
This Saturday, Rwanda will celebrate for the 15th time the Liberation Day a day which Rwandans have been encouraged to embrace while remembering fallen heroes of the liberation struggle and to collectively work to improve the lives of those who still live in abject poverty.
