Cameroon: Cameroon-Austria Friendly in View

The match will take place in Vienna on August 12.

The national football governing body, FECAFOOT has given its approval for a friendly between the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and the Austrian national football team. The match is expected to take place on August 12, 2009 in Vienna. The lions will have to arrive in Vienna on August 10 and to leave on August 13 in the morning.

The match will serve as preparation for the World Cup qualifier against Gabon as the encounter will be taking place three weeks away from the match with Gabon. The match will be the first under the reign of Zoah Michel as Minister of Sports and Physical Education. The appointment of a new minister raise question as to whether the college of trainers put in place by the former Minister, Augustin Thierry Edjoa, will be maintained. Prior to his ousting from government, rumours were rife that Minister Edjoa had had an understanding with FECAFOOT and the official sponsor of the Indomitable Lions, Puma, to search for a foreign coach for the Lions. The sports equipment company had even been given the green light to hire a new coach, preferably a German coach. With time tickling away, the appointment of Minister Zoah Michel, takes both ministry and federation officials back to the drawing board. The only good hope is that the change of persons at the helm of the Sports and physical Education ministry, may lead to a better understanding between the ministry and football federation. This will be in the interest of Cameroon football at a time when the country risk missing a second successive World Cup tournament.

Cameroon’s position in the joint qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations in Angola and the first world cup on African soil in South Africa come 2010. The Indomitable Lions are last in Group with one point after a stunning defeat against Togo in Accra-Ghana and obtaining a disappointing virgin draw against the Atlas lions of Morocco at the mythical Nfandena sports complex in Yaounde. Though qualification is still possible for the Indomitable Lions, there are no more chances for mistakes as a mere draw or another defeat will suffice to put an end to the World Cup dreams of Cameroon.
