Freetown — The ministry of health and sanitation in collaboration with the World Health Organization, WHO has visited Kenema, Bo and Tonkolili districts to assess the healthcare delivery services and facilities within the hospitals and other health components to ensure quality health care system countrywide.
Addressing doctors in Kenema district, WHO country representative, Dr. Wondimanegeghu Alemu told his audience that health workers in general are critical in health care delivery and must be motivated to bring a positive change.
He said he has been mandated to advise and support the health ministry and other health institutions on WHO's Norms and Guidelines for effectiveness and efficiency, adding that the focus of his mission in Sierra Leone was to work with the government to reduce diseases affecting people.
Dr. Alemu expressed the need for public-private partnership, noting that health promotion was multi-lateral from community level upwards and promotes different interventions that center on major health challenges.
He expressed his organization's commitment to continue assisting with drugs, technical assistance, emergency preparedness plans, and tools for surveillance on the new Influenza pandemic.
Health and sanitation minister, Sheku Tejan Koroma said government was aware of the situation, and appreciate efforts being made contain it.
Mr. Koroma spoke of plans to improve their conditions of service, and encouraged them to continue the good work.
"We are moving ahead and very soon we will move to a positive level with our partners," Koroma said.
Resident minister east, William Juana Smith, Mayor of Kenema Chief Brima Kargbo and district medical officer, Dr. Yankuba Bah, enumerated on the problems affecting the running of the hospital. They appealed for additional ambulances, an improved mortuary and the rehabilitation of the hospital, while assuring a positive change.
