Nigeria: NANF Teams-Up With Globacom

30 June 2009

Lagos — Telecommunications giant, Globacom has entered into a partnership with the National Association of Nigerian Footballers (NANF) in a drive to build a database of over two million footballers across the country including their family members and fans. Speaking at a media briefing to unveil the package to members of the association, the President of NANF, Mr. Jalla Harrison stated that the initiative will encourage and enrich the sport of football from the grassroots to the professional level in Nigeria .

He said Globacom as a major sponsor of football in Nigeria is the best partner for this initiative as the database to be developed will benefit amateur, professional and veteran footballers in the country and serve as a resource centre for the various football academies, talent scouts, coaches and FIFA. "This initiative will help lift footballers from the doldrums and create jobs since the registered members can easily be accessed, monitored and given opportunities such as education, training, contract, legal and retirement advice as registered members of the association", he said.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Head of Sales, Globacom, Mr Charles Odiase who represented the Group COO, Mr. Mohamed Jameel, said that apart from the database to be created, Globacom is also putting members of the association on a Closed User Group (CUG) server where registered members can make calls to each other on the Glo network for as low as N6 per minute or 10k per second. He explained that this will be of immense benefit to registered members of the association as it will open up to them new economic opportunities as well as cost saving as subscribers on the Glo network. To register, amateur, professional and retired footballers across the country will only be required to send their bio data to a predetermined short code which will automatically send back a response which the member will take to a NANF office closest to them for final registration and collection of their discounted Glo SIM cards.

Present at the occasion are soccer bigwigs such as Chief Oyuiki Obaseki, Chairman of Nigerian Premier League (NFL), former Wimbledon star and UNICEF Ambassador, John Fashanu who is also member of the Presidential Task Force on the 2010 World Cup, Chief Wole Adeosun, a former Managing Director of First Bank and Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, President General of the Nigerian Footballers Supporters Club.

Notable members of NANF also present were ex internationals such as Nwabueze Nwankwo, Lukman Osun, Gideon Njoku, Godwin Eke, Etim Esin, Lawrence Adoga, Ikechukwu Enwezor and Kevin Uwana.
