Kampala — ARE we about to see yet another Ugandan university getting thrown out of the Zain Africa Challenge after Busoga and Kampala universities? I am not sure what to expect, considering that the team from Malawi's Mzuzu University, which is going to face Makerere in tonight's showdown, isn't a weak one. But I will put my money on Makerere winning. No specific reasons, really. Just a hunch.
See, all the universities still in the game, had to throw out one in the first round. This means none of them can be minimised on their abilities. That's why I am having to run on a hunch, plus of course the fact that in the first round, Makerere got the highest score amongst all the teams that qualified for the second round. It gave a hands-down beating to University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with 860 points against Nigeria's 390.
So that can be our banking tonight.
Tune into NTV (also accessible on DStv Channel 141) at 7:30pm to partake of the brain-busting.
Meanwhile, Makerere, Uganda Martyrs, Nkozi and Mbarara University of Science and Technology are the ones still representing the country after Busoga and Kampala universities got low on luck.
Speaking of luck, Kenya's Moi University wasn't as lucky last Sunday when it faced University of Zambia. In fact, the Kenyan university was sent packing immediately the scoreboard indicated they had got a paltry 450 points against Zambia's 580.
Nevertheless, it was a fast and entertaining game, with both universities exuding good amounts of know-how and the game rounds being a lot shorter than usually is the case. Zambia's game started at a fast pace, but Moi raced and caught up.
But again Zambia out-played Moi, ending the first round at 130 points against Moi's 60.
From then on, Moi was to stay down. Second round ended with it at 90, while Zambia had 220. By the end of Round Three, it had 150 against Zambia's 280.
Moi had the first take on the ultimate challenge, answering six questions out of 10 correctly, and getting 300 points. Topped up on the previous 150, they had 450. Now Zambia needed three correct answers to win. They got six of them and took the day.
Meanwhile, I was happy for their loss. What makes Kenya think they can win every season? Someone should throw out their Egerton.
