Tunisia: Mrs. Leila Ben Ali Opens Fourth Session of AWO's Supreme Council in Tunis

Tunis — Tunisia' s First lady, Mrs Leila Ben Ali who is the current President of the Arab Women Organisation (AWO), chaired the opening of the 4 th session of the Organization's Supreme Council on Thursday in Tunis.

In her opening address, Mrs Ben Ali stressed the need to preserve women's dignity as well as protecting them from marginalization and exclusion.

She also highlighted the importance of achieving further "progress in mindsets, attitudes and forms of behaviour", in order to enhance the status of women in the family and in society.

The Spouse of the President of the Republic also called for the setting up of an Observatory for social and political legislations pertaining to Arab women.

AWO's 4 th Supreme Council session is attended by several Arab First Ladies including Cheikha Fatma Bent Mbarek , the first president of the Emirati Foundation of family development, Princess Lalla Selma, the Spouse of the King of Morocco, and Mrs Amina Abbas (Om Mazen), the Spouse of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Council's 4 th session will examine the adoption and follow up of the implementation of AWO's programs. Resolutions will be adopted as regards the recommendation submitted by the 7 th Extraordinary Meeting of the Organization's Executive Council which was held on June 23-24, in Tunis.

The meeting will also set up the agenda of AWO's 3 rd Congress on " Arab women : an essential partner in the process of sustainable development" which is scheduled to take place in Tunis in 2010.
