Bekai Malick Sosseh, a veteran telegraphist cum general engineer, aged 74 and a resident of Latrikunda German, recently published a book entitled "A Professional Career Guide in Engineering".
The 30-page book, deals with a lot of subjects such as electricity, radio technology, basic telephony, power and generation, marine engineering, 3- phase motors and heavy duty electrical, aerodynamics, radio station installation, among others.
In an interview with the Daily Observer, Mr Sosseh said he got the initiative of writing this book when he retired in 1991 and established his own workshop. According to him, he submitted his book to the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for cross examination. He added that the book was reviewed by the Curriculum Department and approved as a reading material for students in the sasic and senior secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions.
He described the book as a suitable learning material that can be used to giude students in the tertiary institutions like The Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI), President's Award Scheme (PIA), among others. The book, he said, is meant for people who want to become engineers and the book will also teach them to understand that engineering is a lucrative job that can help them to earn more money. "Before, people do not take engineering seriously and they always consider it a dirty job but today, science has proven that engineering is one of the best professions in the world," the veteran engineer remarked. He advised the youths to make the best use of the book.
Mr Sosseh has worked for over 40 years in the telecommunication sector as a telegraphist. He holds a Post Masters General (PMG) Certificate from the London School of Telegraphy.
