Arusha — About 700 children of Esilalei location in Piyaya village in Ngorongoro district have failed to join school this year as the primary school construction work at Emuguru area had been stopped by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority for conservation reasons.

According to the District Education Officer Octavius Leole, the children figures were based on 2007 population census in the village.

Leole said the council had secured 40 places in dormitory schools this year but the problem of enrolling the children in schools was still looming.

The Piyaya village chairman Simon Nairiamu said the village had planned the school for Emuguru area but NCAA could not allow construction in that area.

The chairman said different stakeholders had contributed towards construction fund for the school including Oxfam who pledgedTsh.100 million, Ereto Tsh.15 million, TASAF Tsh.20 million and the residents raised Tsh.53 million.

The NCAA chief conservator Benard Murunya told this reporter that the area was unsuitable for school construction because it is on game migration route.

Commenting on the matter, the District Commissioner for Ngorongoro, Elias Wawa-Lali said the authorities agreed on the technical reasons advanced by NCAA to shift the school construction site elsewhere.

Murunya said NCAA had also contributed Tsh.150 million towards construction of dormitories at Olbabal primary school to create more places to children from the surrounding areas.
