The information and communication technology arm of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB/IT) last week signed a memorandum of understanding with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) concerning statistical data storage as well as collaboration on various ICT solutions for modern civil aviation.
The MoU aims at strengthening the partnership between the two government agencies with a view of acquiring modern-day airport solutions to meet various needs of Kigali International Airport.
The Deputy CEO of RDB-IT, Nkubito Bakuramutsa, said that they seek to exchange knowhow and cooperative advantage aimed at improving capacity for both institutions in their respective mission. He added that the collaboration will result in implementing a wide range of the airport solutions based on modern technologies to raise the standards of the country's airport.
"The Civil Aviation Authority is keen on transforming Kigali International Airport into the most preferred in the region," said CAA's director general, Dr Richard Masozera. "Fostering such a working relationship with development agencies like RDB is a critical element in the realization of our mission."
He added that through the MoU they can make sure that they give people the best services and compete with their neighboring countries.
The cooperation will deal specifically with areas such as the flight information display system; the aeronautical message handling system; vehicle parking automation; extension of the radar satellite distribution system; capacity building; and closed-circuit television on the perimeter fence.
Through the Karisimbi project, the two institutions will also collaborate on building navigation surveillance and air traffic management capabilities in order for the CAA to provide reliable services.
Kigali International Airport is the country's gateway to the outside world. The airport has regional, national and international strategic significance and it is one of the 17 airports identified by the Economic Commission for Africa as a future hub on the continent.
