A middle aged man, Saleh Abubakar, has been arrested by officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Gwagwalada unit command, for selling fake crash helmet to commercial motorcyclists.
FRSC unit Commander, Mr. James Adamu, who disclosed this to our reporter yesterday at Gwagwalada, said the command discovered the fake helmets with the suspect after the interrogation of some arrested commercial motorcyclists that wore the helmet.
According to him, after a thorough investigation of the arrested motorcyclists by FRSC intelligence officers, they confessed to have bought the fake crash helmets from a shop at Gwagwalada, which led to the arrest of the dealer in a combined operation that consisted of the police and FRSC officials.
He said the culprit was released on bond after the police had interrogated him and warned him to desist from further sales of such helmets, adding that five helmets found in the dealers' possession were also seized.
"The dealer was sober, saying that he was ignorant of the implication for selling such helmets," the unit commander disclosed.
He said the bikes of those found wearing the fake helmets were impounded until they produce real helmets, while the command has met with the council chairman to convince him of the need for the council to purchase and sell the helmets to cyclists at subsidized rates.
