Eritrea: More Emphasis to Be Given to the Education Sector As It Occupies a Center Stage in National Development, Minister Says

Asmara — The Minister of education, Mr. Semere Russom, said that more emphasis is being given to the task of providing equitable educational opportunities in all parts of the country, as it occupies a center stage in national development.

He pointed out that vigorous efforts are being made to promote educational opportunities not only as a fundamental right of every citizen but also as a driving forces towards attaining all-round development and preserving the nation's cherished values.

Noting that the Government is giving priority attention to the education sector, Mr. Semere explained that substantial investment has been made to rehabilitate damaged infrastructure in the domain of education in the days of colonial rule and that encouraging progress has been registered.

The Minister went on to say that in line with the endeavors exerted to ensure equitable educational access, especially in remote areas, at least one elementary school has been constructed in all the villages across the nation and the number of students has increased dramatically. Accordingly, major accomplishments have been scored in upgrading the curriculum, promoting women's participation in education and reinforcing adult education programs.

Furthermore, Mr. Russom said that plans have been drawn up and are being implemented to endorse vocational courses at different levels of education and that technical schools have been expanded in different parts of the country. He added that various courses have been offered to high school teachers and over 1,500 junior level teachers received correspondence courses.
