Nigeria: Nyako Flays Military for Staying 'Too Long' in Power

Yola — A member of the defunct Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC) and Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, who is now the Adamawa state governor, Admiral Murtala Nyako(rtd), yesterday, carpeted his colleagues, in the military, for holding on for too long in government .

This, he said, had diminished the immense sacrifice of the military in holding together the country and thus lowering the dignity of the institution in the face of Nigerians.

The governor noted that even those of them in the military had the conviction that military governance in the country was an aberration, describing as unfortunate the circumstances that dragged the military into governance of the country.

He stated that Nigeria was known throughout the world for producing first-class soldiers, who has acquainted themselves in various theatre of war and peace-keeping operations not only in Africa but in other continents.

He stressed that Nigeria had undergone a traumatic experience of the civil war which had truly threatened the existence of the country and praised the resilience of Nigerians in overcoming their differences to remain a united country.

Nyako, who was speaking at this year's Armed Forces Remembrance Day and launch of the Nigerian Legion Emblem appeal fund at the Government House, Yola said the day was significant in the lives of every Nigerian, advising everybody to accord respect to those who paid the last price to keep the country together.

He stressed that there was a need to honour those who volunteered and died in service to keep the integrity of the country.
