The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bwari branch, yesterday announced that transport fares at Bwari have been increased by 50 percent. The union's Public Relations Officer, Danteni Shuiab Gogo made this known during a chat with our reporter at Bwari yesterday.

He said the decision of the union was informed by the new directives of the FRSC on overloading of passengers, adding that drivers in the area have started complying with the new directives since January 1 this year.

"The union has approved 50 percent increment in transport fares, based on the new FRSC's directives on loading," he said.

He said with the increment, transport fare from Bwari to Wuse which was N100 naira has now become N150, while fares from Bwari to Dusten- Alhaji has risen from N50 to N100, adding that commercial vehicles will now carry three passengers per seat instead of four.

Some commuters who reacted to the increment called on the FCTA transport secretariat to increase the number of mass transit buses plying the Bwari to Wuse axis in order to stop the hardship they face daily.

Miss Ijeoma John, a commuter, wondered how a worker with fixed monthly salary can cope with the new transport fares, without a salary increase.
