Ghana: First Female Speaker, Inauguration Ceremony is Underway

Accra — Ghana has confirmed the appointment of her first ever woman Speaker of Parliament, Justice Mrs Joyce Bamford-Addo, a retired Supreme Court judge.

The Chief Justice, Mrs Georgina Wood, administered the official oath to induct the new Speaker into the office. The speaker is described as a gentle, studious and firm advocate of justice and fairness.

Also appointed to leadership positions are Honourable Doe Adjaho, MP for Avenor Ave as First Deputy Speaker, and Professor Mike Ocquaye, MP for Dome Kwabenya, who is now Second Deputy Speaker.

The Member of Parliament for Nadowli West, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, is now the Majority Leader while MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu assumes the positon of Minority Leader.

The inauguration ceremony of President-elect, Professor John Evans Atta Mills and Vice president Mr. John Dramani Mahama is currently under way at Independence Square, Accra where thousands of people and invited guests are gathered.

The invited guests include Heads of State, dignitaries and delegations from all over the world. The top list of invited guests includes but is not limited to President Koroma of Sierra Leone, Gunichiro Koizumi, former Prime Minister of Japan, the Chairman of Africa Union Commission, Jean Ping, as well as delegations from Morocco, the U.S. and Canada.

Also expected to attend the ceremony which comes off Wednesday are the Heads of State of Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Nigeria as well as the Prime Minister of Niger and Vice President of Liberia.

The defeated presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at Ghana elections 2008 is also present at the Independence square to witness the ceremony.
