Uganda: First Lady Advises Women on Leadership

5 January 2009

Kampala — THE First Lady, Mrs. Janet Museveni, has appealed to women in leadership to be exemplary.

She said there was a reason God has today, more than ever, put women in high leadership positions.

Mrs. Museveni made the remarks on Sunday, while addressing the women leadership conference at Ntare School in Mbarara municipality.

The conference, under the theme "A wife of a Noble Character Daring to be Different for God", was organised by the Life Ministry, a Christian-based NGO that is devoted to the promotion of morals.

"Mrs. Museveni told women leaders that as they take up leadership positions in society, they need to set high standards for others to admire and emulate," said a State House statement.

She said being a leader was not easy and advised the women to steer the development of society, saying they were charged with its day-to-day running.

Mrs. Museveni also asked the women to pray for the world, saying crime and immorality had increased.

"Do your part and pray. God will do His part and counter these problems," she advised.

Mrs. Museveni asked the women to make sure they are making a difference in other people's lives.

She asked them to be humble, saying it is when one serves others with humility that one can make a difference in their lives, the statement added.

The First Lady reminded the women that it was their responsibility to bring up God-fearing children.

She advised them not to use their leadership responsibilities as an excuse for their failures.

The Bishop of Ankole Diocese, George Tibesigwa, thanked the First Lady for gracing the event with her presence.

He advised the women to run their families with respect, harmony and unity.

Lois Seruyange of Life Ministries said the organisation targets women in families and institutions of higher learning because they are the back-bone of society.

Seruyange said the organisation focuses on families because strong families lead to strong nations.
