As we say goodbye to 2008 and ushered in 2009, we anticipate that the New Year will bring Liberians many good fortunes, both in their individuals and collective lives.
Although there were times in 2008, when some citizens felt frustrated and took matters to the extreme either by way of street protest or criminality, for most part of the Year generally, Liberians were persistently resilient and kept their calm in the midst of perpetual social-economic hardships with the hope of a better future.
Similar postures are expected in 2009, but with the anticipation that improvements can be made provided that an enabling environment is created in which all Liberians would feel a sense of fairness.
Socio-politically, there is a counterproductive divide, whether perceived or real, but has to be bridged. The government has crated a situation in which it is being perceived that Liberians who resided abroad during the civil crisis are more useful than Liberians who remained at home during the civil conflict.
Such a perception has to be erased, and therefore the government must find a way out by creating an environment in which all Liberians would feel useful.
In a society where government is principal driving force, it cannot be seen as creating an unproductive divide.
Moreover, policy adherence at all levels of the society, but most especially at the level of national leadership must be seen as being devoid of lip-service.
When sincere efforts are seen being applied in realizing such anticipations and expectations, Liberians would feel more fulfilled in their resilience, and thereby translate such feelings to their national development endeavors.
