Nigeria: Ministry Appoints Committee On Industrial Effluent

The Kano State Ministry of Environment has inaugurated a seven-man committee charged with the task of finding possible ways of stabilizing secondary treatment plants so as to address the menace of effluent discharge from the industries in the state.

Terms of reference of the committee, which was inaugurated by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Malam Muktari Usman Dambatta, is to identify the levels and volumes of industrial effluent and also look at the previous reports.

The committee is expected to look at the sharing responsibilities between different stakeholders, source funds for the project and identify proposed site for the secondary treatment plant.

According to him, the committee would serve as a consultant responsible for finding and proffering lasting solution on realisation of the secondary treatment plant.

"The committee consists of a number of people from various ministries, federal and international organizations, such as United Nation Industrial Development Organizations (UNIDO).

The permanent secretary explained that the committee is also expected to come up with a blue print to address the effluent affecting human lives, environment and farmlands, saying that industrial effluent poses greater threat to ecology.

Members of the committee are: Engr. Mustapha Muhammad, Ministry of Environment as Chairman; Lilian Ozamah (UNIDO), member; Mrs. A.V. Enamah (NESREA); Muhtari Abubakar, Ministry of Commerce, M.B. Mustapha (CHELTECH), Salisu Umar (Tanners council chairman), and Sani Murtala Yakasai as secretary.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman, Tanners Council of Nigeria, Alhaji Salisu Umar, assured that the committee would serve the purpose in actualizing UNIDO's mission in Kano, urging all the industries in the state to support and cooperate in a bid to meet the desired objectives.

To achieve the required success, the committee will embark on enlightenment programme, he said.
