CHIMANGA Changa Milling Company has reduced its breakfast mealie meal price to K45,000 for a 25 kilogramme bag with effect from tomorrow.
The milling company has reduced the price from K55,000 after cutting down production costs backed by an assurance that the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) will supply cheap maize.
The milling company has also reduced the price of roller meal from K45,000 to K35,000 per 25 kilogramme bag.
Chimanga Changa Milling spokesperson Answell Nyoni said in a statement yesterday that the company recognised the sensitive nature of mealie meal and had equally listened to the cries of the Zambian people on the high price of the staple food.
"In this regard, we have decided to bring our cost of production low and with the assurance of affordable maize supply from the FRA, we will be able to substantially bring our prices down," he said.
Mr Nyoni said the new prices would initially be applicable to all Copperbelt outlets and retailers.
He said the prices would be uniform in all Copperbelt towns, regardless of distance from the milling plant in Ndola, as transport costs would be absorbed.
Mr Nyoni said that the company was aware that President Banda was passionate and concerned about the impact that the high cost of mealie meal had on the Zambian populace.
Mr Nyoni said, as a responsible company, Chimanga Changa Milling had been exploring how best it could bring down production costs and pass on the benefits to Zambians, especially those that could not afford three meals a day.
He said the company was also aware that during Vice-President George Kunda's visit to Central Province, district and provincial leaders bemoaned the escalating cost of mealie meal.
Mr Nyoni commended the FRA for its cooperation in making the price reduction possible, adding that his company was committed to honouring the agreement.
