AFRIKAANS musician André le Roux du Toit, aka 'Koos Kombuis', spent some time behind bars at the Narraville Police station in Walvis Bay last week.

He was arrested at the Walvis Bay airport for allegedly overstaying his visitor's permit.

He was in Namibia for a short musical tour and holiday.

State Prosecutor Hermiena Apollus said 'Koos' appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court on Thursday, but was acquitted.

In an article in Rapport on Sunday, 'Koos' called his arrest "somewhat unclear", and said he caught the flu because he had to sit in a cold cell.

In his blog on blogs24.com, he calls his experience "a horror".

Said 'Koos': "I was stopped at the airport, ordered to report at the Narraville Police station at half past six that evening where I was refused bail and thrown into a smelly dungeon with nine or ten other luckless souls, where we had to make small talk for hours, while all around us, the prison reverberated with the strangled shouts of people being molested or insulted or harassed by other equally desperate inmates.

"Among the new friends I made in this cell were two alleged rapists, one alleged cattle thief, some illegal immigrants, and several alleged committers of unspecified crimes (those bothered me the most).

"After shaking hands with everyone in the cell, starting with the biggest guy first - a protocol I had picked up from my previous stint in the holding cells - I negotiated a bug-infested blanket for myself, and was invited to lie down on a thin mattress in between the two ringleaders - a very lucky break."
