Nigeria: Country's UTI Out of BB3 Race

Maureen Odubeng

7 October 2008

The public has spoken, the third housemate to leave the Big Brother 3 house is Nigeria's 25-year-old, Uti Nwachukwu.

Uti left on Sunday, following Namibia's Lucille Naobes, 21, the second housemate to be evicted, after Tanzania's Latoya Lyakurwa, 21, who was the first to leave the house.

Unlike the other two evictees, Uti, however was kicked out of the house with a narrow margin, as seven countries voted against him compared to Zimbabwe's Munyaradzi (Munya) Chidzonga's six votes. Uti was up for eviction alongside Munya and Angola's Ricardo Venancio, referred to in the house as Ricco.

Ricco seems to be very popular with the viewers as this is the second time he escaped eviction with no votes at all.

The moment of truth arrived and the three who were up for eviction were asked to go to the glasshouse and await their fate. The trio waited anxiously for the announcement of the unlucky one whose dreams of winning the mouth-watering USD 100, 000 (roughly P670, 000) would be coming to an end, as M-Net's reality show live presenter, Kabelo "KB" Ngakane, intentionally delayed the "bombshell". Unlike in the previous eviction shows, KB this time around decided to do it differently. Instead of announcing the evictee's name, he called Ricco's name and remained silent for a while.

At this point Ricco's heart must have been pounding very fast as nervousness could be read all over his face. As the game is unpredictable, the young man was beginning to think that he was the one going home.

After a long pause, KB finally assured him that he was safe, and told him to go back inside the house, leaving Uti and Munya guessing. On his way back into the house, Ricco took a moment and bowed to the viewers, thanking them for retaining him in the house.

Then KB made the announcement of the night - it was Uti who got the most votes to leave the house. The West African seemed shocked at first, but he quickly recovered, stood up and hugged Munya before leaving the house to join KB in front of the live audience. Outside, Uti was just as lively as ever, answering questions with genuine laughs. He seemed to have accepted his fate.

As is the norm after the brief interview with KB, Uti was shown the housemates who nominated him, and of course he had a few surprises, seeing faces, he never thought would nominate him. The Zambian representative, Takondwa Nkonjera, particularly shocked him. Broadcast by M-Net, the show is produced by Endemol, South Africa, in association with Ecobank, and by Don Suite Hotels.
