The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, Her Excellency Olubanke King-Akerele, on Thursday, August 21, 2008, received in audience, Her Excellency Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the United States of America accredited to Liberia.
Minister King-Akerele welcomed Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield to Liberia, and said she was pleased for the visit and spoke highly of the cordial bilateral ties existing between Liberia and the United States.
Minister King-Akerele recounted the United States Government's support to Liberia in several areas including governance and legislative matters and education. She pointed out that Liberia and America have come too far in their bilateral ties and praised the United States for the numerous assistances provided to Liberia.
Minister King-Akerele then explained to Ambassador Thomas Greenfield how appreciative the Government of Liberia is for the resumption of the Peace Corps Program and the visit of President George Bush to Liberia early this year.
She said the government looks forward to a fruitful relationship during Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield's tenure as United States Ambassador to Liberia.
Responding, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield said she was moved by what she had seen in Liberia, saying she enjoys her stay in the country and described the visit as wonderful.
The U.S. diplomat said Liberia is a special place and America's support to the country will not change, stressing, the support is going to be there. According to her, the expected change in leadership in Washington during the November Election will not affect United States' support to Liberia.
She disclosed that United States' support for Liberia is bi-partisan, and noted that her presence in the country is a dream comes true.
The bilateral discussion was attended by the Charge'd' Affairs at the U.S. Embassy, Madam Brooks Robinson and Foreign Ministry officials including Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, William V. Bull, Deputy Foreign Minister for International Cooperation and Integration, Hon. Commany B. Wesseh, Hon. Marcus Kofa, Assistant Foreign Minister for American Affairs, His Excellency Nathaniel Barnes, Liberia ambassador Designate to America and Hon. Josephus M. Gray, Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister for Public Affairs.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield most recently held the position of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Population, Refugee, and Migration from June 2004 to January 2006. She is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service at the Minister Counselor level.
