It includes a selection of the major stories, plus briefings on business and sports and major countries on the continent. Download allAfrica.com to your desktop for synchronization to a PDA or use a wireless device such an as Internet ready cell phone. Instructions for access are given below.

Accessing allAfrica.com from Web-Enabled Cellular Telephones

To read allAfrica.com on wireless devices and cellular phones, a slimmed down mobile version is available. For a home page that includes 15 top stories, plus 5 on business and sports, plus top news from six major countries, use this URL: http://allafrica.com/handheld/.

To get the top 5 articles on any country, region of topic, add "handheld" to the section URL.

Some Examples:

   For ICT (technology), the URL to use is http://allafrica.com/handheld/ict/.

   For Botswana, the URL is http://allafrica.com/handheld/botswana/.

To download storiesonlyfrom any one section (country, region or topic), add "only" to the URL. This will give you the top 15 stories on that topic.

Some Examples:

   For business, use http://allafrica.com/handheld/business/only.

   For South Africa, use http://allafrica.com/handheld/southafrica/only.

   For Sports, use http://allafrica.com/handheld/sport/only.

Using allAfrica.com's AvantGo channel, you can download the latest news including Africa Briefs, Business Briefs, and Sports Briefs and more - every time you sync your PDA. You can then access the downloaded pages on the go.

Making Your Own allAfrica.com Channels on AvantGo

Any section of allAfrica.com can be an AvantGo channel. To receive stories on a selected country, region, or topic, log in at AvantGo and choose "Create Channel" under "My Account" in the upper right of the page. Below your list of channels, click on "Create Channel" and follow AvantGo's instructions. This will give you 5 stories on the topic of your choice, plus the same setup as the regular AvantGo channel (15 top stories, plus five each about business and sports, and 5 articles about top news from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe).

Some examples:

   For Senegal, the URL to use is http://allafrica.com/handheld/senegal/

   For Soccer, the URL to use is http://allafrica.com/handheld/soccer/

   For East Africa, use http://allafrica.com/avantgo/eastafrica/.

To download stories only from any one section, add "only" to the URL. This will give you the top 15 stories on that topic.

Choose "VIEW" to make sure the URL is correct.

The default "Max Channel Size" is 100K. Users can adjust the channel size depending on the amount of memory available on their device and the total channel(s) memory limits set by AvantGo.

Set the depth to 1 and check "No" for "Include Images" and "Follow Off-Site Links". Select "Channel Refresh" settings. After you click on "SAVE CHANNEL CHANGES," the customized section will appear on your Channel list and should download to your handheld when you next sync your device.
